Valentine’s Day Couples

I don’t have many photos of couples from my family tree. Before the age of widely available pocket cameras, most portraits were (occasionally) taken by traveling photographers in rural America. But I do have these photos of all eight of my great-grandparents. Four couples who married young and stayed married for better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Ruth Esther Dickerson and Carzy Clifford Cole, married 1914. Photo taken in front of their house in Buena Vista, Tennessee, around 1950.
Mary Pearl Harrison and William Jasper Kelly, married 1895. Photo taken in their home in White House, Tennessee, probably in the late 1940s.
Hiram Bembry and Palma Lee Lashley, married 1905. Photo likely taken on their front porch in in Jasper, Florida in the 1930s.
Mollie Irene Sumner and Bertus Monroe Smith, a very nice wedding portrait taken in Suwannee County, Florida in 1905.
